Cadi McCarthy & Company has recently returned from New York,  where Cadi was awarded an artistic residency at the Chez Bushwick studio in Brooklyn.

With the support of artsACT,  Cadi and her company of eight dancers: Laura Boynes, Dean Cross, David Mueller, Chrissy Norford, Hayley Schmidt,  Patrice Smith, James Welsby and cinematographer, Caroline Martin travelled to New York to develop the new work ‘Grappling for the Edge’. Which was performed at the Courtyard Studio, Canberra Theatre Centre in October 2008.

Over the two week residency Cadi with the dancers developed movement material for this new show. As a choreographer,  Cadi was interested in seeing how the city of New York and its intense environment would affect the creation of new dance material, intention and the nature of the work.  New York is an exciting, thought provoking and demanding mecca for the arts and it had the capacity to influence the design and development of the work in some interesting new ways.

This new dance theatre work follows individuals as they struggle to keep afloat in today’s society. With people living to the extreme of their finances, and the desperate need to own more, the work asks the questions - What is really important? When does the desire to be someone else reach breaking point?  And How far is really too far?  Where is your edge?  How close are you to slipping off?
